NEGRO HISTORY WEEK BULLETIN
A Message From President Harry Truman
The following message was received from the President in response to a telegram from the International Workers Order requesting a statement on Negro History Week, January 18, 1946:
I am glad to hear that Negro History Week again will be celebrated. The time of year which includes the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass, two great champions of human freedom is especially appropriate.
The achievements of the Negro have been remarkable. It is very essential that we have a knowledge of the past of a people in order to understand their aims and aspirations for the future. I congratulate all those who seek to extend this knowledge. Their efforts are most praiseworthy.
Very sincerely yours,
(signed) HARRY S. TRUMAN
