Brazil: signing the Golden Law


In 1888 Brazil signed the so-called Golden Law, which culminated with slavery. The Golden Law, driven by the Princess Elizabeth, sparked reactions among slave owners which rapidly eroded the political foundations of the monarchy. This phenomenon is generally regarded as the most direct cause of the fall of the monarchy in Brazil. Along with Cuba, Costa Rica, and South America, Brazil was one of the last countries to abolish slavery
